I was able to make a connection to one of the minor character in the story. A soldier by the name of Norman Bowker. During a night attack, his friend Kiowa gets sucked under the mud. He briefly tries to pull him out, but he is too frightened, and his friend is left to die. The connection I make to this is that I too have been afraid to act. Norman goes on to talk about how he could have gotten a medal for his actions, if only he had had the courage. While I have never been in such an extreme situation, I can still relate, I have let opportunities pass me by because I did not have the courage to do it.

I was able to make a connection with the character, Rat Kiley, in which he actually does harm to himself, as fear of the war closes in on him, he shoots himself in the foot to get discharged. "He took off his boots and socks, laid out his medical kit, doped himself up, and put a round through is foot..". i can relate to this situation because i have done things to get out of stuff. for example.. Ive stayed home so i wouldnt have to turn in homework before, and although not nearly as severe as his situation , is the same in many ways.
